The UBC Trading Group was co-founded in March 2011 by Bryan Nguyen and Michael Kim with hopes of being able to establish a community of investors and traders with all levels of experience. This community would then provide various levels of education on the topics of investing and trading to those interested at UBC and other areas in Vancouver. Our mission statement is “to supplement and facilitate the learning of trading and investing in the capital markets.”
Key Events
Student Directed Seminars
The core SDS will be run by the two presidents with a guest experienced investment banker for the fundamental portion of the seminars. A curriculum has been created for teaching Technical and Fundamental Analysis. These seminars provide students an opportunity to learn from their peers. This environment allows students to ask questions freely and share their opinions and thoughts about the subject matter.
UBC Trading Floor
The trading floor is a brand new idea created so that students of all skill levels are able to come together and trade in the morning. Those who trade real or fake money are welcome to participate. The goal is to generate discussion and ideas for the markets within the day, learn new analysis techniques and simply have some fun in the morning. Food, beverages, and extra monitors will be supplied.
Tiered Trading Competitions
We believe that the best way to learn the material taught in the seminars is to be able to apply it immediately through friendly competition. The prize pools will be formed from the participants themselves with additional bonuses from UBCTG.
Professional Speaker Series
Every month or so, the Trading Group will bring in professionals from the industry to come talk about advanced material. This may be material that can be applied at home or material to expect in the future and an opportunity to learn more about the career. We expect to have professional seminars on topics such as derivatives, Forex trading, and systematic trading.
