    KEY EVENTS

    Career Night

The Career Night is the biggest finance-focused career event in UBC and is geared towards senior students seeking employment. The Career Night is a one-night event, consisting of two components: a networking session, followed by dining in an intimate setting.

The event begins with a networking session, at which every participating firm, of which we expect more than 20, is given a booth to present information about their company and the products they offer. Booths are located at the perimeter and center providing an option for premium placement in the center with many booths available circumscribing the space for employers to showcase their business. Each firm will be provided with tickets that can be given to favored candidates, giving those candidates admission to the second component of Career Night, the exclusive dining session.

The dining session will be held immediately following the networking session and will be exclusively for firms and invited participants only. Delegates have successfully found new employees and fostered relationships in this intimate setting, making it the most attractive and sought after part of the entire event.

    Mock Interviews

As part of our effort to provide opportunities for students in the financial industry, The UBC Finance Club, in collaboration with prominent industry partners, holds two mock interview sessions each year. Participation is open to UBC Finance Club members and the interviewing and coaching is done by premier industry professionals. There are two Mock Interview sessions during the school year, through which corporate partners can easily track the progress of the participants and thus notice their ability and inclination to better themselves. Mock Interviews enjoy a very high demand from students, facilitating the process of relationship building and future career planning.

    Company Visit

Company visits aim to present a realistic perspective of the obligations that particular positions in a firm involve. A small group of pre-selected students will visit the office of a partner firm where they are introduced to the office and the general environment of the firm. Visits usually consist of two parts, an introductory tour and discussion followed by a competition. The beginning is characterized by an introduction and tour by the company, in which students learn the specific responsibilities of the positions. A short question and answer period gives chances for new dialogues to start. In the second part, students are given a task similar to the responsibilities of a particular position and corporate partners are given the chance to monitor students’ performance in a new environment and under time constraints. Some of our members have indicated that company visits in particular have opened many doors to them and acted as a jumpstart in their career.

    Investment Banking Competition

The foundation of the competition was rooted to provide an opportunity for students to analyze a real-life case and to understand the intricacies of Investment Banking.

The competition will assess the various desired qualities of an aspiring analyst. We envision the competition to identify the followings traits in competitors:

    • Analytical aptitude
    • Public speaking and presentation skills (soft skills)
    • Problem-solving skills under time pressure
    • Understanding of financial concepts (including financial modeling)
    • Ability to function at a high level in dynamic circumstances

The competition seeks to capture the essence of the Finance industry comprising: real world rigor; innovative thinking and competitiveness.

Lastly, the competition seeks to provide an opportunity to connect the upcoming generation with the industry through dialogue, network, and mentorship.

    BC Portfolio Management Challenge

The BC Portfolio Management Challenge was borne from the annual UBC-SFU Stock Game originating 19 years ago. In 2002, with the sponsorship and vision from TD Securities Limited, the ‘Stock Game’ was developed into a portfolio management format. In the last several years, the BC Portfolio Management Challenge has added Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel Limited, the Canadian Securities Institute, the BC Securities Commission and CFA Vancouver as co-sponsors. From a small rivalry game that was between only two universities, the BC Portfolio Management Challenge is now expected to attract more than 20 institutions for 2009/2010. Students manage a hypothetical portfolio of $1 million which they invest for a 6 month term. Letters of Commendation will be awarded to those who are able to outperform a selected index during the challenge period.

    Seminar Series

The UBC Finance Club holds several seminars throughout the fall and spring semesters. These seminars occur on campus with durations of 60 to 90 minutes, allowing for the delegate to speak about their practical experience in the respective field and participate in a question and answer period afterwards. Students and delegates alike are put at ease by the classroom like setting, facilitating fluid communication.
