History of the Commerce Undergraduate Society

The Commerce Undergraduate Society is an organization that has stood the test of time and over time, has molded into what you see today – a $1.2M organization that acts as the student voice with the faculty and the rest of UBC, while creating opportunities for social and academic enhancement.

The CUS was established in the 50’s barely after the Faculty of Commerce was formed. In many respects, we play the same role today that the society did over 50 years ago, but we’ve simply tailored our approach to the number of students and the interests of the times.

One of the most memorable social engagements of the CUS is its beer garden which is affectionately referred to as POITS – you can ask any older student for a translation.

In the “old days”, POITS used to be held in the old war huts behind the school. It was a refuge from the burdens of school work and a place for students and professors to enjoy a couple or more social beverages outside of the classroom.

As the organization developed over the years, a variety of services and opportunities arose, including our longest running conference the International Business Conference, as well as the Commerce Mentorship Program. These events and services, much like many others have grown and expanded as students with different visions have taken on the different roles.

The CUS was drastically changed in the 1999/2000 year as the CUS Executives led the way to increase the student fee from $16 to $266. This was brought in at a time when there was a serious need for improved computer facilities, career search services, and funds to expand the opportunities available to students for a variety of programs.

Today, in light of all the time and energy of every student involved on council, and the countless volunteers who’ve helped each event, the CUS at Sauder is one of the largest Business Undergraduate Societies in Canada. Hopefully during your time here, you will have the opportunity to leave you mark on this society as well, like many others have before you.
